What makes subtitles good?
Subtitles are segments of text that are displayed on a video in order to make the audio comprehensible to the audience whether it be because they don’t know the language or have a hearing disability. There are different things of which to be aware depending on the target audience and the goal of the video. People generally read more slowly than we understand words spoken out loud. This means that is is crucial to ensure that the subtitles can even be read to compress the material to a certain degree, focusing on the relevant elements. A professional subtitle translator will know how to do this.
Another aspect is the fact that different audiences and different genres need different reading speeds (characters per second). This ensures that the viewer is able to follow the plot and an expert subtitler will be able to ensure that.
It’s also important that the subtitles don’t stand out, e.g. because of spelling mistakes or logical errors – good subtitles are the ones that nobody notices. They become an organic part of the video and gets your message across, seamlessly and almost invisibly.
